HISTORY AND BASIC RULES OF THE HANDBALL GAME
HISTORY OF HANDBALL
Handball is a team sport, the main goal of which is to throw as many balls as possible into the opponent’s goal. Unlike football, the ball is played with the hands. Each match consists of two 30-minute halves, with a 15-minute break between halves.
The homeland of handball is considered to be Denmark, although there are mentions of ancient handball games in Homer’s “Odyssey” and in the works of the ancient Roman physician Galen. Handball in its current form was invented by Danish footballers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a substitute for football for playing in winter.
The date of birth of the sports game with a ball, registered in the international sports classification under the name “handball”, is considered to be 1898, when the teacher of physical education Holger Nielsen from the Danish city of Ordrup introduced a game with a ball called ” handball”.
The origin of handball in our country dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. This sport first appeared in Kharkiv in 1909. The first official game of handball teams took place in 1910 in Kharkiv, and in 1918 a “handball league” was organized there.

The handball team consists of 16 people, of which no more than 7 players can be on the court at the same time, the rest are reserves.
Matches of adult teams consist of two halves of 30 minutes with a 15-minute break.
The match starts with the introduction of the ball in the center of the field. Players can safely touch the ball with any part of the body, except the feet. Before making a pass, it is necessary to make sure that the player is at a distance of more than 3 meters.
Before making a pass or throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal, each player has the right to hold it only for three seconds. At the same time, you can take no more than 3 steps with the ball in your hands, then you will have to pass it to someone else.
Only the goalkeeper is allowed to be in the goal area. A field player is considered to have stepped into the goal area, which includes the goal area line, if he touches it with any part of his body. However, it is not penalized if a player steps into the goal area after passing the ball, and this does not lead to the loss of an advantage for the opponent, and also if a player of one of the teams without the ball enters the goal area and does not receive an advantage from it.
Players can be substituted an unlimited number of times. The player of the team that is being replaced will enter the field only after the player who was on the field leaves it.
If the transfer of the ball from the defensive zone to the offensive zone is delayed, then it is called a passive game. The team is penalized with a free throw from the place where the ball was when the game was stopped.
