The history of the creation of basketball
The history of the development of modern basketball began in ancient times. A game similar to modern basketball existed even among the ancient Scandinavians or Mexican Indians. Pok-ta-Pok was originally played in Mexico in the 10th century BC. A slightly modified game was still played at the end of the 16th century by the Aztecs in Mexico.
The direct predecessors of modern basketball were the German game of netball and the children’s game “duck on a rock” that was common in the 19th century. The game consisted of throwing a small stone to hit the top of a larger stone.
Ultimately, the idea of playing basketball was formed by James Naismith, a physical education teacher at the Youth Christian Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Naismith chose a soccer ball for the new game because it could be easily caught with the hands. In addition, he nailed two peach baskets to the balconies at a height of three meters, into which the ball had to be hit. Initially, Naismith wanted to use cardboard boxes for this purpose, so basketball could well be called “boxball” (“box” is translated from English as “box”, and “ball” is “ball”). But he didn’t have any boxes at hand, so basketball came out (“basket” – basket, “ball” – “ball”).
On December 21, 1891, the first ever basketball game was held in the training center of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Springfield, Massachusetts.
In 1893, the baskets were replaced by iron rings with a net. In 1894, the first official basketball rules were issued in the USA. In 1895, shields were installed and the first official competitions in this sport were held.
In 1923, the first international women’s tournament was held in France. Teams from three countries took part in it: England, Italy, USA
Naismith lived to see the game he invented became an Olympic sport. Basketball was played for the first time at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. At that time, the rules of the game were slightly changed, the number of players on each team was reduced from 9 to 5 and a free throw line was introduced.
